At Kampala Kalerwe-The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, The Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu has launched a Cleaning Campaign at St. Nicholas Church of Uganda-Kalerwe one of the landmarks ahead of the 50 years (Golden Jubilee) Anniversary for the Diocese of Kampala.
The exercise commenced on Saturday 16 July 2022 in Kalerwe slums where the Archbishop Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu who doubles as the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, other clergy and Christians from the diocese were joined by locals and officials from Kampala Capital City Authority to spread the gospel of cleanliness.
While speaking during the launch of the exercise at St. Nicholas Church of Uganda, Kalerwe, Archbishop reminded the community of the need to keep the environment clean to guard against diseases.
“We need to keep our lives protected against diseases that come from dirty environment. We want to appeal to locals not to dispose garbage and polythene bags wherever they find. We are here to demonstrate that we have to be clean in our hearts by getting rid of bad behaviors and also be physically clean as cleanliness is next to holiness.”He said.
The diocesan secretary Rev. Canon John Awodi, added that by engaging in the clean-up exercise, the diocese is executing their mandate of preaching the gospel not only by word but also through action.
“As we mark 50 years, we decided that this shouldn’t only be a time of celebrations but also a time of re-awakening ourselves to the mandate that Jesus Christ gave us. The mandate to continue preaching the gospel. A holistic gospel that’s not just about preaching by word but also through action and change of attitudes.”Said Awodi
He added, “Today we decided to come to Kalerwe to demonstrate what we are supposed to be doing as a church, that is; preaching the gospel, teaching the people and also reaching out to the communities practically”
The Golden Jubilee Celebrations are running under the theme “Ebenezer: His Mission, Our Priority (1Samuel 7:12)” and the climax is on August 21, 2022 at All Saints’ Cathedral, Kampala.
