Today, April 27, 2022, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, The Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu and the Assistant Bishop of Diocese of Kampala, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hannington Mutebi have flagged off the Jubilee celebrations activities to mark 50 years of Kampala diocese‘s existence.
The event happened at St. Andrews COU Bukoto where the clergy of the diocese had gathered for a two-day retreat.
The Archbishop revealed that the guest of honor at the celebrations will be The President of republic of Uganda; H.E.Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Kwashi, the Archbishop of Jos Province in the Church of Nigeria, and the General Secretary of Gafcon will preach.
In his remarks, the archbishop said that the Golden Jubilee Celebrations will run under the theme: Ebenezer: His Mission, Our Priority based on scripture from 1Samuel 7:12; Matthew 6:33; Luke 4:14-19.
“Therefore, as we celebrate 50 years, we need to remember that it has been His help hence the word Ebenezer,” he said.
The theme was chosen to inspire the faithful to recognize the Lord’s help to them and to be thankful, always.
Additionally, the Archbishop emphasized the diocese’s commitment to attaining self-sustainability by establishing the following Jubilee Projects; Bukoto Apartment, Bugolobi Jubilee Plaza, set-up of a Diocesan Health Facility, to mention but a few.
He highlighted some of the major milestones the diocese has been able to register in the last 50 years of her existence. Among them:
a) In 1972, we did not have any Archdeaconry. Now we have three: East, South and Central Archdeaconries.
b) In those archdeaconries we have 12 parishes, 7 chapels
c) In 1972, we had 18 male clergy and 2 female clergy. In 2022, we have 70 male and 23 female clergy
d) There are no reliable records of the number of Christians we had in 1972, but presently we boast of 27,347 Christians in the diocese.
e) We had four church founded institutions, but these have increased to seven
f) We did not have any church founded health institution, now we have one.
Over the next few months, the diocese will host numerous activities to mark this jubilee. Some of these include: MDD, tree planting, cleaning some of the slum areas, compassion visits to orphanages, prisons, hospitals and other homes serving underprivileged people. These events will culminate into a festival as we officially enter the new Cathedral at All Saints’ Cathedral Kampala-Nakasero.
The chairperson organizing committee Mr. Peter Kiiza commended the good work done by the great men and women of God who started the Diocese. He added that it is our turn to add on what they did.
In attendance were the different heads of Laities from different parishes, clergy and diocesan secretariat team.
The Diocese of Kampala is one of the 37 constituent dioceses of the Church of Uganda inaugurated on 16 January 1972. This year 2022, the Diocese of Kampala made 50 years since her inception.
