Let us institutionalize the Boy Child Campaign- Archbishop Kaziimba tells synod

The Diocese of Kampala has today 9th December held her 14th ordinary general assembly— known as synod—at All Saints Cathedral Kampala. During the meeting, the two houses (Clergy and Laity) each elected a chairperson. Rev. Canon Geoffrey Byarugaba was elected chairperson house of Clergy while Mr. Kyazze Raymond from St. Luke’s COU Ntinda was elected head of Laity for the Diocese. The meeting was attended by all delegates from all parishes, canons of the diocese, the assistant bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hannington Mutebi among others.

In his charge, His Grace, Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the archbishop of the Church of Uganda and also the Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala requested the synod members to think about the boy child to ensure he is not left behind.

“It’s a good thing to care for the girl child, but boys have been left many miles behind; we are losing a whole generation if we don’t act now,” the archbishop said. The synod agreed to institutionalize the boy child campaign and appreciated His Grace for championing such a great cause.

In his remarks, the archbishop pointed out how the Covid-19 pandemic had destabilized many diocesan plans and put everything to a standstill, but it never stopped God’s work. “Online ministry kept us closer to the congregation. It is the way to go.” To this end, he urged the synod to support Family Television to grow and realize its potential in the whole province.

The archbishop acknowledged the continued support of the Love Gift Campaign towards securing the Church of Uganda commercial building on Kampala Road, and called upon members to consider starting a pension scheme for the clergy so that they can get gratuity when they are no longer in service.

This 14th synod has sat at a time when the diocese is ramping up efforts to celebrate 50 years of existence. Kampala Diocese was curved out of Namirembe Diocese in 1972.
