Fathers’ union holds leadership handover ceremony

By Ivan Naijuka

Saturday, 25 October 2025, The Diocese of Kampala Fathers’ Union held a warm and spirit-filled handover ceremony marked by humility, gratitude, and renewed commitment to servant leadership and Christ-centered family life.

The Guest of Honor, Rev. Canon David Sserwadda, representing both the Bishop and the Diocesan Secretary, congratulated the outgoing leadership and commissioned the new team to serve with humility and courage.

He emphasized that leadership in the Church must mirror the servant-heart of Christ:

You should not dominate or order around your followers, let your office speak louder than your voice. The Cross-is a sign of leadership, and we are called to serve

Quoting John 3:30, he reminded the members, “He must become greater; I must become less,” urging the leaders to always put Christ above self in all their undertakings.

The outgoing Diocesan FU President, Mr. Samuel A. Bakutana, expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve and thanked his team for their unity and faithfulness while in service.

The team you serve with determines what you achieve or fail to achieve. We have served this Union with integrity, and we are grateful to the Lord, he said.

He encouraged the new leadership to continue strengthening Christ-centered families guided by Christian values.

The incoming Diocesan FU President, Mr. Charles Yakani, appreciated the outgoing leadership for laying a strong foundation and pledged to build upon it.

We shall plan together, set timelines, and work as a team. We hope to visit parishes, strengthen coordination with the Diocesan Secretariat, and keep the Diocese of Kampala’s banner high, he stated.

He further appealed for office space at the Diocesan Secretariat and a budget allocation for the Fathers’ Union to enhance coordination, visibility, and impact, emphasizing that resource mobilization will be key to sustaining their mission.

Mr. Yakani also reminded members that service in the Fathers’ Union is voluntary and a calling to strengthen families and serve humanity.

In his closing remarks, Rev. Canon Sseruwadda commended the outgoing team for promoting unity and joy among Christian men and advised them to support the new leaders.

The event was overseen by Mrs. Miriam Mukombozi Birakwate, the Diocesan Family Life Coordinator, who also represented the Diocesan Missions Coordinator. She commended the Fathers’ Union for its steadfast commitment to nurturing godly families and encouraged the new leaders to lead with teamwork, prayer, and a listening heart.
